24-year-old remanded in custody after allegedly breaching prior bail conditions, assaulting a police officer, and targeting vehicles

A man has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today charged with public order offences and interference with vehicles.

Ryan Doherty (24) of Clon Dara in Derry appeared charged with a series of offences that occured on September 4 and 5.

Doherty was charged with assaulting a police officer, attempted criminal damage to a cell van, disorderly behaviour and going equipped for theft.

He was also charged attempted criminal damage to a cell van at Altnagelvin Hospital as well as four counts of interference with vehicles.

Doherty was also charged with assaulting a female again on September 4.

A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.

The court was also told that Doherty had breached the curfew condition of his bail as well as the no alcohol condition.

The officer said that the defendant was so intoxicated he had to be taken to Altnagelvin Hospital.

The court heard that the defendant had only been released from custody some 4 weeks ago.

The officer said that the risk of re-offending was 'extremely high' with the defendant having 89 previous convictions.

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman said his client was on Crown Court bail.

Bail was refused and Doherty will appear again on October 1.
