District Judge Suzanne Rice rejects excuse of 'welfare check' to ban repeat speed offender.

Derry Magistrate's Court heard today that a man was detected driving at 121mph on the A6 road.

Mark Simon Verschuur (41) of Silverbrook Park in Newbuildings admitted the offence that occurred on October 18 2025.

The court was told that the defendant was detected driving at 121mph at 3.30 in the afternoon.

Defence counsel Sinead Rogan said that at the time of the offence conditions were dry and the road relatively quiet.

At this point District Judge Suzanne Rice said that regardless of the conditions there was no Road where it was permissible to drive at more than 70mph.

Ms Rogan said her client was performing 'a welfare check' on a friend who was 'highly distressed'.

She said that the defendant's employment was at risk if he was disqualified.

Judge Rice said that Verschuur had four previous convictions for speeding between 2005 and 2016.

She disqualified him for three months and fined him £400.
