Banned driver arrested in car park just minutes after leaving Derry Court

Daman Gibbons was arrested again after jumping straight into driver's seat following driving ban conviction
Derry Magistrate's Court heard today how a man breached his bail conditions minutes after leaving the courthouse by driving after being disqualified in sight of two police officers.
Damian Gibbons (50) of Rosses Gate in Derry had just pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified on July 27 when he walked into the carpark and got into the driver's seat of a car.
This was witnessed by a police officer who knew the defendant and she proceeded to call for assistance.
Gibbons drove out of the carpark and was stopped by two police officers who attempted to take the keys out of the ignition, only for Gibbons to accelerate.
An officer had to jump out of the way to avoid being injured and police smashed the window of the vehicle and Gibbons was extracted from the car.
He was subsequently arrested for driving while disqualified.
Bail was opposed as police believe he is a clear risk to the public, to himself and to police officers.
Defence Barrister Stephen Chapman said that Gibbons was 'being extremely naive' but said that he had been on bail for the initial charges since last summer.
District Judge Suzanne Rice denied the bail application, citing his 'appalling record'.
He was remanded in custody and will appear again on August 20.
