Peaceful protest at Magiligan prison regarding the protection of pooches

The protest took place today (Monday) outside Magilligan Prison

A peaceful protest has taken place today outside Magilligan Prison. The protest was in relation to the welfare of a ‘comfort dog’ named Bailey who previously resided within the prison. The dog was used as a form of rehabilitation for prisoners.

It is understood Bailey has been removed from the prison. However the protest was organised by Causeway Coast Dog Rescue as a way to highlight the larger concern about all dogs and animals in NI prisons, without regulation and safeguard.

After previous concern for the dog’s safety, East Derry MLA Cara Hunter wrote to the Justice Minister Naomi Long to express her worry.

In findings provided to Ms Hunter it was confirmed that all previous concerns about support dog Bailey were unfounded.

Previous media reports told of how the comfort dog had been introduced by prison chiefs for violent sex offenders in the County Derry jail.

However the inspection found that Bailey was in “excellent condition, alert, active, and comfortable, and shows no signs of neglect or stress. He freely interacts with staff and prisoners, has regular contact with another dog, and has 24/7 access to on-call veterinary care.”
