Denise Johnston has called for anonymous Facebook account to be taken down
A local councillor has called for an anonymous Facebook account to be taken down after “serious allegations” about local people have emerged on the site.
Mid Ulster SDLP councillor Denise Johnston shared how the Facebook page operating under anonymity has been brought to her attention by locals.
Cllr Johnston said: “This page is making allegations about people living in the local area.
“Freedom of speech does not give you the automatic right to defame others.
“You are not safe behind an anonymous account. Your email can be accessed, You can be identified, You will be prosecuted.
“Please think through what you’re doing and close down the page before irreparable damage is done.”
Cllr Johnston confirmed that she has made contact with PSNI regarding this page.
A PSNI spokesperson said “Police in Mid Ulster have received a number of reports regarding an online group. Officers are investigating and enquiries are on-going.”
At the time of print the page was still in operation.
