During a routine patrol on the A6 outside Dungiven this morning (Friday), police stopped with a stationary vehicle which had a flat tyre.

Upon inspection of the vehicle’s tyre officers uncovered it to be in a ‘horrendous state’ with ‘threads and wires protruding’. The other tyres on the vehicle were also in poor condition.

The vehicle was prohibited from moving until all the tyres were changed.

According to PSNI Facebook Page ‘NI Road Policing and Safety’, “The driver will now have to attend the local magistrates court in the near future.”

In the same Facebook post the PSNI shared helpful tips on good tyre practice.

“Good tyre treads will help grip the road in various weather conditions and reduce braking distances..

“Attend a local tyre centre for a tyre inspection or here are a few pointers to assist;

Turn the steering fully and check the often missed inner tyre edges.

Are there any threads exposed, cuts, bulges or irregular wear?

Is the tread coming anywhere close to the tyre tread depth markers, the minimum tread depth for cars and vans is 1.6mm

When were the tyre inflation pressures last checked?

Don’t run the risk of a fixed penalty of 3 points or a court appearance.”
