Sports centres, museums and play parks will be among the facilities closed today because of a one-day strike by Derry City Council workers.

The workers are taking the action because of an ongoing pay dispute with management.

A rally involving several trade unions will be held at the Guildhall Square at 1pm today.

However, the strike action will lead to extensive disruption to council services and facilities today.

Templemore Sports Complex, the City Baths in William Street, and Brooke Park Leisure Centre (pictured above) will be closed all day.

The summer recreation scheme currently operating at Templemore Leisure Centre has been cancelled for today.

Bishop's Field Sports Centre and 3G pitch will be open as normal.

Lisnagelvin Leisure Centre will also remain open and summer scheme swimming lessons will continue as normal.

The Tower Museum and Foyle Valley Railway Museum, which are both run by the council, will be closed today.

All council-run recycling centres in Derry will be closed today.

All gated facilities within public park areas with remain closed.

St Columb’s Park will be open to the public via the ungated entrance off Browning Drive.

The Pennyburn Dog Pound will be staffed by one person who will be based at the kennels on the strike day to undertake dog kenneling duties.

In relation to bin collections, a council spokesperson said blue bins due to emptied today were scheduled to be emptied yesterday.

Black bins due to be emptied today will now be emptied tomorrow instead.

A council spokesperson said: “Residents are asked to leave their bins out as normal including same collection points on the rescheduled days.”
