Derry City Council has shot down a licencing application for a street food van in the Guildhall Square.

Kevin Pyke of ‘Pyke ‘n’ Pomme’ addressed the Environmental Services Licensing Committee on Thursday outlining the reasons he believed he should be granted a mobile trader licence.

The committee said no street trading licences would be granted for food vans in the Guildhall Square.

However, it agreed that a ‘compromise’ may be reached and deferred the application.

Suggestions included locating the van at the Christmas market or permitting street food trading on a designated day of the week.

Mr Pyke told the committee he believed his street food van could bring many benefits to the city centre.

“London, Berlin and Amsterdam have all embraced the trend for street food,” he said.

“I want to give Derry a chance to try street food at reasonable prices.”

SDLP Councillor Sean Carr commented: “Your passion for food comes across very well but the location is the problem.”

Councillor Carr suggested a ‘compromise’ could be met to allow Mt Pyke to trade in the city centre.

‘Pyke ‘n’ Pomme’ has been trading from a converted mini bus on the quay at Strand Road for the last year and half.
