The Public Inquiry into the murder of Pat Finucane begins on Wednesday.

On its eve, The Pat Finucane Centre (PFC) has welcomed the commencement of the Public Inquiry into the murder of Belfast Solicitor Pat Finucane by British state agents in 1989.

PFC director Paul O’Connor said: “The Pat Finucane Centre welcomes the fact that the long-awaited Public Inquiry into the murder of Pat Finucane is finally due to get under way.

“We pay tribute to the Finucane family for the dignity and resilience they have shown throughout their long campaign for justice.

“We fervently hope that this inquiry will uncover the entire truth and reveal the identities of the killers and their handlers, as well as the decision makers and policy formulators who initiated the process which led to the silencing of a courageous human rights lawyer.”

Martin Finucane added: "Tomorrow we see the beginning of the inquiry into my brother's murder.

“Our focus remains, as it always has been, on establishing the full truth about Pat's murder.

“I feel very proud that we have fulfilled our promise to Pat and never gave up.

“I look forward and expect that the inquiry will conduct its work thoroughly, transparently and in accordance with the state's obligations under Article 2 of the ECHR and it is essential that the chair and the inquiry are fully independent and free to follow the evidence wherever it leads."
