A Co Derry man has been jailed for 16 years for the cold-blooded murder of his former girlfriend.

Fred McClenaghan was only three feet away from Marion Millican (pictured above) when he blasted her with a shotgun in the Portstewart launderette where she worked in March 2011.

The 52-year-old, from  Broad Street in Magherafelt, had been found guilty of the horrific killing but sentencing had been put back to today.

It was the second time McClenaghan was convicted of murdering the mother-of-four.

His original conviction was quashed on a technicality and a retrial ordered.

McClenaghan had denied the murder, claiming  it was a suicide pact that went wrong and the gun went off in a struggle.

However, the prosecution had described her murder as “akin to an execution” of an “entirely innocent woman” and a jury unanimously found him guilty.

He was arrested within hours of the shooting after dumping the 100 year old antique shotgun as he fled..

He will not be eligible to apply for parole until 2027.
