Local sprint star Jason Smyth is to receive a civic reception after clinching a fifth gold medal at the Paralympic Games in Brazil
The Eglinton man clocked 10.64 seconds as he finished 0.14 ahead of Namibia's Johannes to a third straight T13 100m title in Rio.
The visually-impaired runner had previously won sprint doubles in Beijing and London.
However, he was unable to make it another double in Rio after the International Paralympic Committee opted to remove the T13 200m from the athletics programme.
A proposal to honour the 29-year-old was put forward by a former Mayor of the city, Cllr Martin Reilly, the SDLP group leader on Derry City and Strabane District Council.
He said: "When Jason won double Gold in the 2012 London Games, building on his earlier similar success in Beijing in 2008, there were great celebrations in his home village of Eglinton.
“I have proposed that we honour him again as his contribution to sport in this city and further afield continues to be immense and inspirational.
“I'm glad to say that all councillors agreed to this proposal and Council officers will now engage with Jason, his family and the community in Eglinton to finalise plans."
