SDLP Derry Councillor Martin Reilly has called for Union flags across the Waterside to be taken down before an accident occurs.

He was speaking after seeing flags left 'tattered and clinging to lampposts' in the city.

“There are a number of Union flags on lampposts in the Waterside that should be taken down as soon as possible," he said.

"I’ve had concerns raised with me about specific examples at Caw Roundabout and outside the Park and Ride at Drumahoe on the main Derry to Belfast Road.

"While many people myself included want to see these main arterial areas always free of flags, there is an urgency required for action to have these flags taken down now.”

Councillor Reilly continued: “This flag at the Park and Ride in Drumahoe at the Ardmore Road junction is an example of one very large Union flag that’s about to break of the lamppost it’s been erected on. If that happens, it could fall onto the busy oncoming traffic, creating a very serious and dangerous situation.

“I’m calling on those responsible for putting up these flags in the first place to ensure they are taken down as soon as possible before an accident happens. It is disrespectful to any flag to have it left flying tattered and torn.”
