Derry customers with communication difficulties can now use simple visual aids to manage their banking independently

Bank of Ireland has introduced Speak Easy Cards across its branch network, helping customers with communication difficulties express their banking needs more easily and access support independently.

Available in Derry's Culmore Road and all Bank of Ireland branches, the easy to use cards feature simple images, colours and phrases which customers can use to request services such as checking an account balance, replacing a debit card, accessing online banking support or asking for additional assistance.

Over 300,000 adults in Northern Ireland live with hearing loss, while almost one in four people report a long-term health problem or disability, highlighting the importance of accessible and inclusive customer communications.

Launching the roll-out across Bank of Ireland, George Higginson, Managing Director Everyday Banking, Bank of Ireland UK said: "For many people, asking to check a balance, replace a card or request support is straightforward, however for some customers, communicating those needs can be difficult and, at times, overwhelming.

“Speak Easy Cards provide a simple but effective way for customers to tell us what they need, helping remove barriers and enabling more confident and independent banking.

"The introduction of Speak Easy Cards is another step in our wider commitment to accessibility and financial inclusion, ensuring every customer feels understood, supported and able to access the services they need."

Bank of Ireland customers benefit from a range of accessibility supports, including hearing loops in every branch, SignVideo services for customers who use sign language, participation in the JAM Card and Hidden Disabilities Sunflower schemes, and access to alternative communication formats such as Braille, large print and audio documents.

Customers can access the full range of Speak Easy Cards available in each branch. They can also be downloaded from Bank of Ireland’s Extra Help Centre, which provides dedicated guidance and support for customers, carers and families.

Information on accessibility supports available can be found at: Extra Help Centre - Bank of Ireland UK.
