SDLP Councillor John Boyle has welcomed the news that the Northland Centre's funding crisis has been averted but said that a long term solution was needed.
Mr Boyle said: "I welcome the fact that the Northland Centre have received some degree of comfort as they continue to battle daily to provide a vital service for people from throughout the North. However, I am concerned that the solution found merely provides comfort in the short term and may represent a sticking plaster approach to the situation."
"I feel that it was entirely inappropriate for the Health Minister to to have cancelled a meeting with a cross party delegation from Derry City & Strabane District Council at the eleventh hour. We had waited patiently for over six months for the opportunity to bring our concerns to the Minister.
"We would have welcomed the chance to emphasise the fact that there is an absolute necessity to address the potential financial challenges that the Northland Centre will face in the medium to long term future. The SDLP are determined to continue to lobby and make the case for uninterrupted support for the Northland Centre, no matter who the Minister for Health is."
