Anti-apartheid signage erected on the main approach roads into Derry during the recent Bloody Sunday commemoration weekend by the Bloody Sunday Trust and the Pat Finucane Centre, has been defaced.

Unveiled by members of the Palestinian Youth Movement, the signs read: 'You are now entering Derry - an apartheid-free zone'.

The vandalism occurred on the sign erected on the outskirts of Muff village in Inishowen, Donegal.

Speaking to the Derry News, Maeve McLaughlin, the director of the Bloody Sunday Trust said she found it "confusing" anyone could be against Derry's designation as an apartheid-free zone.

"I cannot understand why anyone would want to deface imagery which was put in place by two human rights organisations - the Bloody Sunday Trust and the Pat Finucane Centre," said Ms McLaughlin.

"Derry has a proud history of protesting against, be it the ongoing genoide in Gaza and Palestine or in South Africa during the infamous apartheid era.

"I am truly perplexed that anyone could deface such a statement in such a manner."
