Residents in the Moorside Villas estate in Desertmartin have been left without a bin collection for two weeks running, a supposedly ongoing problem in the area that has been plaguing people ‘on and off’ for the last two years.

Speaking to the County Derry Post, Moorside Villas’ resident, Pat Kidd, explained that the bins have been left uncollected on a number of occasions over the last two years, however it is beginning to happen on a much more frequent basis.

“It is difficult to get in and out of the estate” explained Pat, “The footpaths are too wide and there are usually cars parked along the footpath on either side.

“This was however, brought to the attention of representatives from the council, by myself and other residents when the footpaths were built years ago, that a foot should be taken off on each side of the path. Back then was the time to do something about it before problems, like this, arose.”

Pat maintains that things can be done by the Magherafelt District Council to make the collection a lot easier.

“One suggestion” he said, “would be a smaller lorry.”

“At the end of the day, I can deal with the bins not being collected every once and a while, however for the likes of the older residents in the estate that depend on the council to empty their bins, something should be done about it.”

According to the ‘refuse collection and disposal’ section on the Magherafelt District Council’s website, you are entitled to have your refuse collected from a domestic premise “once a week from your kerbside.”
