Derry Track Club’s Conor Kelly has been named in the Athletics Ireland relay team for the World U20 Championship.

Set to take place in Peru between August 27th and August 31st, the teenager will look to add to the bronze medal he won at the European U18 Athletics Championships in Slovakia.

Kelly broke the previous record time for an Irish athlete at the U18 level to run 400 metres with his time of 46.97 seconds.

The rising star of Irish athletics had set his sights on this competition in Peru after his medal in the U18 European Athletics Championships.

He said: “I still have the world under 20s. I’m being told I might not be doing the individual thing, but I’m still going to try my hardest to get into the team.

“My coaches and I have got a lot of plans in place; we reckon I’m getting a lot quicker over the next couple of years.”

Kelly has made the men's 4x400m relay team alongside Adam Courtney (Ballymena and Antrim), Stephen Mannion (South Galway AC), Sean Doggett (Athenry AC), Fintan Dewhirst (Tir Connaill AC), and David Davitt (Clonliffe Harriers AC).

Athletics Ireland will also be bringing a female 4x400m relay team consisting of Niamh Murray (Bray Runners), Daisy Walker (Monaghan Phoenix), and Amy Jo Kierans (Oriel AC).
