Leading Alliance Party member Anna Lo will speak at an anti-racism event in Derry this week.

Ms Lo said last month that she would be withdrawing from politics after being subjected to sustained racist abuse by loyalists angry at Alliance’s support for a compromise agreement on flying the union flag on Belfast City  Hall.

She will speak at a meeting at 8pm on Thursday at The Junction building at Bishop Street.

It has been organised by Stand Together Against Racism (STAR).

A STAR spokesperson said: “We are coordinated with the Belfast Against Racism Group. Racism is not merely a Belfast phenomenon. We have had people put out of their houses in Derry too.

“Racism is not likely to go away any time soon. In Derry, Belfast and elsewhere, we need a standing body which can go into action to oppose outbreaks of racism whenever they arise.”
