A consultant costing £30,000 is to be brought in to look at a name and logo for the new Derry and Strabane ‘super council’.

Forty councillors were elected last month to the new council which is currently called Derry City and Strabane District Council.

The new council will operate in shadow form until April 1 next year when it will take over the running of local government matters from Derry City Council and Strabane District Council.

A meeting of the shadow council was held today at the Guildhall.

At the meeting, the councillors agreed to appoint a consultant to look at a new name and logo.

The consultant is expected to be appointed by August of this year.

The current Derry City Council logo features a skeleton (above) while the logo used by Strabane council features scenes from the local area.

In relation to the name of the new council, today’s meeting was told that a public consultation process will take place at the start of next year before a final decision is made.
