Those responsible for a security alert in the Skeoge area of Derry have been condemned by SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney.
Police have moved around 40 families from their homes in the Clon Elagh in the Skeoge following the discovery of a suspect device.
A section of the estate has been cordoned off (pictured).
Condemning those responsible, Cllr Tierney said: “Clon Elagh is one of the relatively new developments in the city. It’s full of young families, trying to make a life for themselves. The last thing anyone here wants or needs is to be forced from their home by another security alert.
“Forty homes have already been evacuated, causing significant disruption for local people. I want to thank the council and the Shantallow Community Residents Association for making the local community centre available for those who have been forced onto the streets.
“I’ve been at the scene speaking to those affected. We’ve fought for much needed housing like this in our city for years. This kind of throwback undermines the hard work done to secure new housing and get local people housed.
“I’ll continue to liaise with the PSNI to ensure that people can make a safe return to their homes as soon as possible.”
