More than 2,000 reports of domestic abuse were made to the PSNI in Derry over the last year, it has been revealed.

The Derry News also reported police in the city dealt with 15 rapes, two attempted murders and 20 sexual assaults arising out of domestic abuse in Derry during the 2014/15 period.

The figures were obtained through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request lodged by the investigate news website, Detail Data, which revealed the PSNI in Foyle received 2,410 reports of domestic abuse over the last year.

Police records also show three people in Derry were killed by their partner, ex-partner or a family member over the past ten years.

Commenting on the figures, a spokesperson for the PSNI said that rise in the number of reports of domestic abuse being received by police indicated that more people were now coming forward.

“This tells us that people who may not have previously come forward are taking the courageous step and calling the police,” the spokesperson said.
