Police have cordoned off a number of roads in Derry after receiving reports that a firearm had been been found.

The PSNI are currently examining what they have called a 'suspected firearm' which was reported to them around 1.15pm this afternoon.

A statement from the police says that a number of cordons are in place on the Branch Road at Buncrana Roundabout, Coshquin Road, Aileach Road and O'Nuallian Crescent.

Chief Inspector Jonathan Hunter said: "An examination of the object is underway and police have taken steps to ensure the safety of the public and we thank them for their patience at this time."
