BREAKING: Dan Tanui sets new course record to win the Walled City Marathon for the second year in a row

By GARY FERRY, Derry News Sports Editor

Defending champion, Project Africa's Dan Tanui, has won the Walled City Marathon for the second year in a row, setting a new course record of 2.19:44 - almost six minutes ahead of his nearest rival. The previous course record was 2.22:40. Tanui, who is from Kenya, successfully saw off the challenge of his fellow countryman Eric Koech - who won the Derry race in 2016. Koech, who finished in 2.25:30, won last month's Belfast Marathon in a time of 2.18: 19. Derry athlete Mark Mullan was first home of the local finishers in fourth place. Heather Noone, from Mayo, who only started running in October, has won the women's race in a time of 3.05:24. Conditions have been largely favourable for the 1,400 runners, who set out from the Everglades Hotel at 08.30am this morning. The intense heat of the earlier weekend has passed following last night's rain. Diversions will be in place across Derry until early afternoon to allow the rest of the runners to finish. This is the sixth Walled City Marathon, and organisers say the event is going from strength to strength. MORE DETAILS - INCLUDING TIMES/PLACINGS OF THE TOP LOCAL RUNNERS - TO FOLLOW.
