PSNI: Hijacking in Creggan area of Derry

Police in Derry have cordoned off a section of the Creggan estate following a hijacking. The security alert is ongoing in the Circular Road district. Superintendent Gordon McCalmont said: "The operation follows the report of a vehicle hijacking in the area, just before 11:30am. "A white Transit van was reportedly hijacked by three masked men who threw an object in the back of it before abandoning it. "We are now putting in place cordons in the area, and we anticipate significant disruption to the local community while we work to the make the scene safe. "We understand the effect this will have on the local community, but we will not take any chances when it comes to keeping people safe. “There are no further details at present.” Sinn Fein MLA Elisha McCallion said she had been made aware of "an incident" in nearby Ballymagowan and anyone affected can avail of services at the "Corn Beef Tin and Old Library Trust on Central Drive. She added: "If anyone needs any additional assistance please feel free to contact Sinn Féin on 02871377551." Meanwhile, police have reduced the security cordon following Saturday night's car bomb in Bishop Street. A PSNI spokesperson said investigators were "working around the clock" but Bishop Street car park remained closed. CAPTION: The scene at Circular Road in Creggan.
