St Patrick's Maghera 4-13
PS Chorca Dhuibhne Daingean(Kerry) 2-20
All-Ireland PP School's Paul McGirr Cup final
St Patrick's Maghera suffered All-Ireland heartbreak in the cruelest of ways in Kildare on Saturday afternoon as they fell to a one-point loss to a PS Chorca Dhuibhne side managed by Kerry boss Eamonn Fitzmaurice. They had led at various stages throughout the game, and full-forward Alex Doherty even bagged a hat-trick, but it wasn't enough as the Munster champions produced the goods during extra time after a last minute free from Doherty had forced the game to that stage.
It took seven minutes for the game to really catch fire as both sides were guilty of some poor wides, but PS Chorca Dhuibhne soon made the breakthrough when Cillian O'Failbhe found the net from close range.
The lively duo of Alex Doherty and Conleth McGuckin were causing no end of problems for the Kerry school's defence in the open half, and it was the former who bagged St Pat's first goal when he palmed home after being set up by McGuckin.
Doherty was at it again just before half-time, and it was a similarly simple finish as he applied the finishing touch from close range following a superb run from Eunan Mulholland, a score which helped the Derry students into a 2-4 to 1-4 interval lead.
While St Pat's had dominated the first half, it was very much a different story in the second as the Munster men wrestled control of the tie. Ruaidhri O'Beaglaoich was a constant thorn in the side of the St Pat's defence, and he kicked a succession of points to help level matters midway through the half.
A brilliant run and stunning finish from Eunan Mulholland put the Ulster champions back in the ascendancy as that goal put three point between the sides once again, put Chorca Dhuibhne kept coming back and they responded almost immediately with a goal of their own, this time finding the net through Aodhan O'Dubhain.
St Pat's trailed by a point as the game entered its final passages, but Doherty stepped up to nail a 50 metre free and send the tie to added time.
It was Eammon Fitzmaurice's men who seized the initiative in the first period of extra time, scoring five points without reply, but there was one last kick in the Derry boys as they mounted another fightback. Sean Kearney kicked them to within four, before Doherty netted a 72nd minute penalty to reduce the gap to one. Both of those players kicked points in response to another O'Beaglaoich score, but a late point from O'Dubhain proved enough for the Kerry school to win out.
