Sometimes it is nice to indulge a little and treat yourself to a relaxing spa day - after all we all need a bit of pampering in our lives.

It can be tricky at time to know what treatments are really going to benefit you and what treatments are just there to add to the effect.

I was away in Italy skiing and after a long week of physical activity, my body definitely needed a little tender love and massage!

So I booked myself into the most stunning beauty, health and wellness spa located in the middle of the Italian Alps. Needless to say, my bank balance got hit with a bang but by God was it worth it.

With an array of treatments to choose from at various different costs, it got me thinking - how does the average woman know what treatments should she splash out on?

Yes they all sound absolutely  fabulous but they are meant to, so I decided I would test it out and pick my top spa treatments for you to indulge in.

Exfoliate and polish. 

Our skin says a lot about how we treat our bodies, so look after it.

Choosing a full body exfoliation followed by a hot pressurised shower will leave your skin feeling fresh and polished. Bringing fresh oxygen and nutrients to the skin surface will automatically leave the skin feeling smooth and looking fresh.

Increased blood flow around the body will leave you feeling invigorated. A must have treatment when visiting any spa!

Body wrapping

My tip for you when booking a body wrap treatment is to speak to your therapist before you arrive for your treatment. Find out what type of wraps they use and the benefits of it.

Body wrapping is a fantastic way for the body to absorb any essential oils used in the treatment. In fact, body wraps are becoming more and more popular. This isn't surprising when you list the benefits such as toning, cellulite reduction and skin hydration, along with weight loss management.

This is one treatment that you will want to continue on a regular basis.

Sauna and steam Room

The sauna and steam room is the first place you'll find me, a pure get away and relaxation for the mind and body.

The heat from a sauna soothes and relaxes your muscles which is excellent if you suffer from stiff joints or tight muscles. The heat encourages your body to release endorphins, a feel good chemical that will help reduce your stress levels. You will find that you will sleep much better after your visit to the sauna.

The steam room helps open up the body's airways which improves breathing and helps clear out any impurities from the body. I can tell you that your skin will feel completely cleansed after you have had time in the steam room.

Mud bath

If you are fortunate enough to book into a spa that has the facilities of a mud bath then I urge you to try it, you will never look back!

Mud baths improve the complexion, relieve joint and muscle pain and release toxins from the body.

A mud bath is extremely relaxing as your body is emerged in the warm, soft texture of the mud. After the mud bath, the mud is washed off by warm water and you will be wrapped in a preheated blanket to allow the body to return to its natural body temperature.

Do yourself a favour when indulging in this treatment, allow yourself to relax and empty your mind of any thoughts, sit back and take it all in.

Swedish massage

Using an almond hot oil as the medium, lie back and totally unwind with a full body massage.

Swedish massage is a light but also sufficient pressure applied to the body while the therapist works to release any tension or stress around the muscles.

Massage prompts a healthy mindset, allowing  your therapist to encourage blood flow, bringing fresh oxygen and nutrients to the skin surface.
