An Occupational Therapist from Newbridge has been awarded for her outstanding work with people who have dementia.
Karen Walls, a Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist from the Northern Health and Social Care Trust (NHSCT), has been awarded first prize in the Dementia Design Project of the Year Category at the Northern Ireland Dementia Achievement Awards.
Karen’s forward thinking led to the setting up of a pilot project whereby a client with Dementia can be located via satellite using GPS. The client wears a device that alerts a carer via a text message or email if the client goes outside a pre-set boundary.
The project aims to help keep people at home for longer and facilitates people with dementia who enjoy walking outdoors to continue this valued and important activity independently.
