Pupils at Derry schools have been given the opportunity to show their technology skills.
One hundred young people gathered at St Cecilia’s College for a chance to develop the apps of the future.
The students took part in the Creative Schools App Challenge.
Students at secondary schools were asked to put forward their best ideas for new mobile apps.
Over 500 young people took part, submitting over 160 ideas between them.
Friday’s workshop saw the top 100 students develop their ideas further before presenting them to a panel of industry judges.
The five groups with the most promising ideas will get the chance the chance to work alongside some of the top digital talent in Northern Ireland, learning essential business and entrepreneurial skills whilst seeing their ideas come to life.
Juliette Barber, a teacher at St Cecilia’s College, praised the programme.
“The Schools App Challenge offers our pupils a creative opportunity to connect with the technology of their world, fusing elements of design, IT and business with meaningful careers education.
“We are already offering App design classes and an extended schools club, this is the perfect extension to engage the whole school and raise the profile of digital, creative technology.”
Dr. Rachel McClure from CultureTECH, one of the programme partners, said: “We have been astounded by the quality of the ideas submitted from all of the schools that have taken part, right across the North West.
“What’s even more exciting is that it’s just a small example of the huge talent and imagination of our young people.
“This event will help showcase that talent and give these students a chance to see what working in the digital industries is really like.
“We hope it inspires them to consider a career in digital technology because there is no doubt that they have some amazing ideas.”
