Heartfelt tributes have been paid to a Limavady charity fundraiser who was well known for playing the role of Santa in the local community.

Brian McCluskey died ‘suddenly but peacefully’ at Altnagelvin Hospital on Sunday, September 13.

The 78 year-old father-of-five was known throughout County Derry and further afield for his charity work.

He was also instrumental in establishing the local men’s shed in Ballykelly and he was heavily involved in Limavady Volunteer Centre over the years.

Brian was North West Fundraiser for premature and sick baby charity Tiny Life for six years. He retired from that role in 2021.

The grandfather and great-grandfather was also North West Fundraiser for NI Chest Heart and Stroke charity.

A death notice stated that donations could be made in lieu of flowers to either of the above charities by forwarding to the family or via O'Brien & McGrotty Funeral Directors in Limavady.

Over the years, Brian played the role of Santa at many charity events and in schools.

He was a regular face at the Drummond Hotel’s Christmas events.

A spokesperson for the Ballykelly hotel paid tribute to Brian and acknowledged the joy he brought to many children over the years.

“It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our beloved Santa, Brian McCluskey,” said a spokesperson for the Ballykelly hotel.

“For many years, Brian brought pure magic, joy, and love to countless children and families here at the Drummond Hotel. His warmth and festive spirit will never be forgotten.

“Rest in heavenly peace, Brian. You will be dearly missed by us all.”

The committee of St Finlough’s Hall in Ballykelly also offered its condolences to Brian’s family.

“Brian’s presence at our Christmas event each year since 2018 added joy and fun for us all but especially for the children,” the spokesperson said.

“Brian is irreplaceable and will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Brian.”

Hundreds of tributes have also been paid online by those who have fond memories of Brian.

One woman said: “I am so sorry to hear this heartbreaking news. Brian will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. He leaves behind a lasting legacy through all the work he has done within the community. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Another person added: “Condolences to the whole family. Brian was such a gentleman and had a passion for all that he believed in. He will be sadly missed by the whole of Limavady community and beyond.”

Brian’s funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 16 at 12noon in St. Mary’s Church, Limavady with interment immediately afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

Brian is survived by his wife Ursula, children Barry (Fiona), Neil (Tracey), Kathy (Sean Murray), Noel and Columb (Paula) and extended family circle.
