Thieves got away with a haul of cigarettes in an early morning ram-raid at the Galliagh Co-op.

The police have appealed for information about the robbery which took place at about 1.30am this morning.

Inspector Smyth said: “ Shortly after 1:30 am it was reported that a vehicle had caused damage to the shutters of the shop and entry was then gained before a quantity of cigarettes were stolen from it.

Anyone with information is asked to  contact 101 quoting reference 207 28/01/18.  Or, alternatively information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”

The police will be examining a number of CCTV cameras around the shop, which has been targeted for robbery many times in the past.

The car thought to have been used in the attack was recovered some distance from the scene later.

The shutters and front facade of the building have been damaged, and debris from the bumper of a red car is visible on the ground outside.
